Advent: The anticipated arrival of Jesus

Grace and peace to you all from the One whose arrival we eagerly anticipate, Jesus Christ. Amen.

As you read this, my friends, we will be in the season of Advent. It is a time of anticipation, as we prepare to celebrate once again the miraculous birth of the Savior Jesus Christ.

As is the tradition at St. Mark’s we will light the candles of the Advent wreath at the beginning of worship each of these four Sundays. I would like to take this time to share the meaning/symbolism of the wreath and candles we use.

The Wreath: This is a symbol of the endless nature of God’s love.

Candle #1: Hope. This reminds us of our hope of salvation

Candle #2: Peace. This tells of the peace Jesus brings to our hearts.

Candle #3: Joy. This reflects the joy of the shepherds at the announcement

of Jesus’ birth.

Candle #4: Love. This represents God’s love for all humanity.

The Christ Candle: We light this one on Christmas Eve as we recognize the birth

of Jesus as the light of the world.

My prayer for all of us is that we will take the time during this busy season to contemplate the symbols of the Advent wreath. By doing so, I believe we can stay more focused on the true meaning of this wonderful time of the year: A time meant to bring us Hope, Peace, Joy and Love.

Be blessed and be a blessing,

Pastor Chuck
