Arguing with God: Genesis 18:20-33
Those of you who frequently come to worship at St. Mark’s have undoubtedly heard me talk many times about the fullness of the character of God. It is a good thing to consider from time to time in order that we don’t fall into a comfortable place where we only think of God has all-loving, forgiving, etc. Blessedly, God is all those things, but also so much more.
God is also just, faithful, patient, the list could go on and on. One more to consider today: God is perfect.
If you were to read the above scripture (go ahead, I’ll wait), glad you’re back! This fascinating passage is as it seems; Abraham arguing with God.
Arguing with someone perfect (God) seems like a losing endeavor. If God is perfect, then even the most well thought out argument with fall short. With that being true, why is this back and forth even in the bible?
I think it is there as an encouragement for all of us. You see, I don’t believe for a second that Abraham changed God’s mind. But I do believe that God honored his earnestness and concern for those people.
My friends, be encouraged. God is perfect, and because of this the Almighty knows what is in your heart and on your mind. Like Abraham, don’t shy away from expressing you feelings and concerns to God in prayer.
Remember, God loves you! So much so in fact that God desires you to pour out your heart to him. When you are uncertain about something, when you are in pain or even if you are angry with God, do not hesitate to share it all with the Lord.
God won’t love you less just because you might be mad or uncertain as to why something has happened. No, because God is perfect, there is always room for you and I do be as honest as we can be him.
I’m not saying that our most heart-felt prayer will change God’s mind or way of looking at things, but it might just change ours.
Be blessed and be a blessing,
Pastor Chuck
